Happy 40th birthday Sesame Street!

It's hard to believe, but today marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street! Over the past four decades, Sesame Street has been entertaining and educating children all across the world. To pay tribute to the colorful cast of characters, we've been delighted to feature some of your favorites on the Google homepage during the past week. With this effort, we're honored to help support <a href="http://www.sesameworkshop.org/home">Sesame Workshop</a>, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street. It's always great to see the spotlight on children's education, and we hope you enjoyed the homepage doodles as much as we did.<br /><br />And, we have an exciting birthday surprise — for this very special celebration, we're happy to share a <a href="http://www.google.com/logos/sesamestreet.html">high-resolution gallery</a> that includes all of the Sesame Street doodles for you to download. We're delighted to have partnered with Sesame Street to create this special series of doodles, particularly since we share the same values of education, diversity and accessibility. A mysterious series for H.G. Wells

You might have noticed an unexplained set of doodles on the Google homepage and a couple tweets from our official Twitter stream, <a href="http://twitter.com/google">@google</a>, over the last two weeks. Announcing the 2009 Doodle 4 Google Winner

Nearly six million online votes helped us pick the winners of this year's Doodle 4 Google competition from a very creative pool of doodles. Today, we're pleased to announce the results.<br /><br />Congratulations to Christin Engelberth, a sixth grader at Bernard Harris Middle School in San Antonio, Texas. Vote for the national Doodle 4 Google winner

In February we <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/doodle-4-google-tell-us-what-you-wish.html">invited</a> U.S. kids to exercise their creativity by participating in our second annual Doodle 4 Google contest. In response, we received more than 28,000 doodles from kids representing all 50 states, a 70 percent increase from last year. Inspired by this year's theme, "What I Wish for the World," kids have expressed a variety of wishes, ranging from a world with a pristine environment to a world where imaginations can run free. We were impressed by the incredible spectrum of artwork we received this year, but even more amazed by the artistic talents of the kids who created them. Thanks to all those who doodled with us!<br /><br />Today, we're pleased to announce the <a href="http://www.google.com/doodle4google/winners_state.html">approximately 400 state finalists </a>and the <a href="http://www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html">40 regional winners</a>. Since Cooper-Hewitt is focused on design and education and fostering the brightest design minds of tomorrow, they were a natural partner for Doodle 4 Google. Their partnership also means that this year's prizes not only include having your artwork on the Google homepage for a day, a college scholarship, and a technology grant for your school, but also having your work (and that of all 40 finalists) exhibited at a Smithsonian museum!<br /><br />Most of this year's contest remains the same as last year's. About our Veterans Day logo

Today is <a href="http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/index.asp">Veterans Day</a> in the U.S., a day to honor all veterans of military service. As we often do, we created a special design of the Google logo (which we call a "doodle") in honor of the event. The design for the doodle featured a few military-style hats. We weren't trying to represent all of the branches or all of the symbols of military service and, as a result of space and design limitations, we inadvertently left the <a href="http://www.uscg.mil/" title="U.S. Coast Guard" target="_blank">U.S. Coast Guard</a> out of our depiction.<br /><br />Understandably, we have heard from many veterans and Coast Guard members, and have now posted an updated version of our Veterans Day doodle, including all five branches of the military. <br /><br />Our sincere apologies for what may seem like a slight -- this was not in any way our intention. Our thanks to those of you who were alert enough to catch our omission and diligent enough to tell us about it. Thank you very much to all current and former Coast Guard members for your outstanding service. Ten years and counting

The Google doodle tradition started a long time ago (in <a title="1999" href="http://www.google.com/holidaylogos99.html" id="fzjy">summer 1999</a>, in fact) when Larry and Sergey put a <a title="stick figure" href="http://www.google.com/tenthbirthday/#doodle-a-doodle-is-born" id="d_ee">stick figure</a> on the homepage to signify that they were out of the office at <a title="Burning Man" href="http://www.burningman.com/" id="ip7:">Burning Man</a>. Nothing against stick figures, but our logo designs have become rather more varied since then. Today you'll see a special design that commemorates our 10th birthday. We've incorporated a little bit of history by using the original Google logo from 1998. We have a Doodle 4 Google national winner!

Her creation, "Up in the Clouds" was selected for its artistry and creativity as well as for its interpretation of our "What if...?" theme. What if... you could have your doodle on the Google homepage for a day?

Google Doodle) on our homepage to commemorate special birthdays and events. History is cool for school

This lot, between the ages of 4 and 18, ditched celebrity-watching in favour of good old-fashioned historical figures when they sent in their drawings to our <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/doodle4google">Doodle 4 Google competition</a>. (You may recall our informal name for this contest was <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/04/day-off-for-dennis.html">"Day Off for Dennis."</a>) Given the theme of ‘My Britain’ as their inspiration, school children up and down the UK got creative with the Google logo, hoping to see their entry on the Google homepage. Nearly half (45%) of their entries included monuments and historical figures from Big Ben to the Blackpool tower, and from the Queen to Shakespeare. Everyone at the London Googleplex was really impressed with how passionate the kids were about Britain, not to mention their talent. <br /><br />And though some of you may laugh about British food, we were proud to see that a quarter of entries featured <a href="http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=fish+and+chips&btnG=Search+Images">fish and chips</a>, proving what we all already knew – that you can’t beat traditional British grub!<br /><br />On Monday and Tuesday, we met thousands of children whose entries made it into the finals at the Science Museum in London. The wrapup gave them a chance to check out each others' designs and talk about their Doodles -- and of course it gave us the exciting job of announcing and congratulating the fantastic winner, 13-year-old Katherine Chisnall, from the South West of England. Aside from her day of fame on the Google.co.uk homepage, Katherine and her family will be soon be visiting our <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=&btnG=Search+Images&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=il">world headquarters</a> in Mountain View, California. The whole event was great fun, and who knows? Day off for Dennis

These <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/holidaylogos.html">Google 'doodles'</a> are designed exclusively by the original Doodler, <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2004/06/oodles-of-doodles.html">Dennis Hwang</a>. Here in the UK, we wanted to let Dennis have the day off and give someone local the chance to get their artwork in front of millions. After a successful <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/11/thanks-victoria-doodlers.html">pilot competition</a> in 2005, we're pleased to tell you that our 2006 "Doodle 4 Google - My Britain" competition is now open and accepting doodles from pupils ages 4-18 in all schools across the UK.<br /><br />A panel of experts will judge, narrowing the submissions down to a Top 30 and the public will vote for their favorites. Case in point: the 2006 Winter Games, now playing in Torino, Italy and on a wide-screen TV and, yes, computer screen very near you. How can Google help enhance your enjoyment of the world's finest athletes competing in one of the world's most gloriously wintry natural settings without actually getting up out of your office chair? And you can noodle around on them, too.<br /></p> <p>Finally, if you're from Italy, France, Great Britian, Switzerland, Austria, Greece or Spain and are interested in employing your geek skills to win a Fiat Sedici, throw yourself headlong into the <a href="http://www.sedicicontest.it/google/en/index.jsp">Fiat/Google Earth Contest</a>, which involves using Google Earth to sniff out a Torino location big enough to hide a car but (presumably) small enough to not be totally obvious within a few minutes. Thanks Victoria doodlers!

<span class="byline-author">Posted by Dennis Hwang, Webmaster and <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2004/06/oodles-of-doodles.html">Google Doodler</a>.</span><br /><br />Last week Google opened our new office in the Victoria area of London, and to mark the occasion we invited students from nearby schools to create their own Google Doodles from our logo. My fellow judges and I were basically considering three qualities: the originality of the doodle idea or topic; integration of the design with the Google logo; and sheer creativity. We received hundreds of entries with all sorts of themes, ranging from serious topics like the Asian tsunami and the Battle of Trafalgar to an entire logo transformed into a bunch of eyes staring at each other. In the end, we chose <a href="http://www.google.com/events/doodle4google.html">these five finalists</a>. And our winner, which graced our <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/">U.K. home page</a> for a full day, was this charming doodle from 11-year-old Lisa Waiwaina:<br /><br /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/uploaded_images/uk_doodle4google-772374.gif" style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left;" /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />In the end, I was simply blown away by the amazing quality of the work, especially from younger artists up to around age 11 (the bunnies drawn by 5-year-olds were simply awesome). It was a good reminder that staying in touch with one’s inner child can be a key to creativity. Now, back to my secret agenda of searching for a young apprentice...
