Sounds of summer

<span class="byline-author">Posted by Hunter Walk, Product Manager</span><br /><br />Googlers like music. We play in bands. We've got live music at our lunch BBQs. We've even been known to break into song at company meetings. But our secret sauce is the <a href="http://www.google.com/local?sc=1&hl=en&q=shoreline+amphitheatre&near=mountain+view+ca&btnG=Google+Search&rl=1">proximity</a> of Google's Mountain View office to Shoreline Amphitheatre, a popular outdoor concert venue. They've got a <a href="http://www.shorelineamp.com/schedule.html">full slate</a> of shows each summer and sometimes I'll just hang out at the outer extremes of our campus, letting the tunes drift over the hills to my ears.<br /><br />But while barely audible summer hits are nice, the fringe benefits of having rock stars so close to the office can sometimes pay off in more surprising ways. When Coldplay performed at Shoreline a couple of years back, it was an excellent excuse for some of the band - together with lead singer Chris Martin's <span style="font-style: italic;">inamorata</span>, Gwyneth Paltrow - to come by and <a href="http://google.blogspace.com/archives/001013">visit Google</a>.<br /><br />And with <a href="http://www.coldplay.com/index.php/">Coldplay</a> returning to Shoreline this summer might we expect another visit from Gwyneth and her husband? Maybe. But I'm secretly hoping we get a different musical luminary walking the halls at Google this summer because, well, <a href="http://www.ozzfest.com/bands.html">Ozzfest</a> does come to Shoreline in August.

Looking for Ian Turner (updated)

I just found out that Ian Turner, a well-known moderator and search engine optimizer, hasn't been seen since last weekend. If you've seen Ian more recently, could you contact his family? There's more information <a href="http://www.threadwatch.org/ian">here</a>.<br /><br />Everyone is hoping that he's safe and sound somewhere.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Update:</span> Ian's okay! He lost his passport, but he's doing fine in Atlanta.

Search gets personal

<span class="byline-author">Posted by Sep Kamvar, Software Engineer, Personalized Search Team</span><br /><br />With the launch of <a href="http://www.google.com/psearch">Personalized Search</a>, you can use that <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/04/from-lost-to-found.html">search history</a> you've been building to get better results. You probably won't notice much difference at first, but as your search history grows, your personalized results will gradually improve.<br /><br />This whole concept of personalization has been a big part our lives since some of the team was in grad school at Stanford. We shared an office, which happened to be the same one Sergey had used before, and we were pretty familiar with the research he and Larry had done. Related to their work, we thought building a scalable system for personalizing search results presented an interesting challenge. We've still got a long way to go, but we're excited to release this first step. So check out this latest addition to <a href="http://labs.google.com/">Google Labs</a> and tell us <a href="http://groups-beta.google.com/group/Google-Personalized-Search">what you think</a>.

Cover the earth

Now we've landed on <a href="http://earth.google.com/">Google Earth</a>. You can fly from space right down to any place on the planet and take in spectacular 3D views, and for major US cities you can now see 3D city models. And more: where Google Local works today (the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.), you can search Google Local from within Earth for points of interest, businesses listings, driving directions, and lots more (like some of these <a href="http://earth.google.com/sites/">excellent locations</a>). Well, now we're ready to start displaying all that stuff.</http:><br /></p> <p> I've been amazed by your cool videos. I had never seen a <a href="http://video.google.com/videopreviewbig?q=imovie&time=0&page=1&docid=-1343222394162793574"> robot dog harassing an iguana</a> before, or a <a href="http://video.google.com/videopreviewbig?q=monkey+karate&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;time=0&page=1&docid=5895096290258347524"> monkey doing karate,</a> and I had no idea you were <a href="http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=breakdance"> such good dancers</a>.
